Country House Plans

Historically, country house plans originate in Britain and Ireland. These were usually large houses in the country side with more than 25 rooms and 8,000 square feet of living space. Unlike traditional English country house plans, which used to be built in any architectural style, today's country house floor plans are typically smaller and feature very specific architectural features. For example, their roof line normally runs parallel to the main road. They either have a front porch and a back porch, or a wrap-around porch. Exteriors are usually some form of clapboard siding.

Inspired by 19th-century summer cottages along the East Coast, this versatile shingle-style design is suitable as either a year-round residence or a vacation retreat. Serving as outdoor entertainment areas are a wrap-around veranda in front and a screened porch in back. Hardwood floors and nine- and ten-foot ceilings add beauty and volume to the indoor living spaces. The front door opens to a two-story foyer. A wood stove warms the spacious living room. Nearby, the dining room is nestled between two sets of sliding French doors, one to the veranda and the other to the porch. Centrally located, the efficient kitchen features a convenient pass-through to the living room. Double doors open to the first floor master suite with its private bath and access to the porch. The master bath includes a handy pocket door to the utility room. Upstairs, two bedrooms, both with sloped ceilings, share a four-fixture bath. A built-in seat makes the balcony area special.
